The ON2U Collective is a young group of multi-disciplinary artists who have come together to utilize their talents and realize a progressive performance and transmedia piece about sugar, THE SUGAR (REDUX) project.

The goal of this project is not to tell the still ongoing story of victimization, but rather to create new mythologies, a revisionist fantasy, where victims no longer take on the supporting role but rather become the heroes and main characters of this story. Through a “Pop” treatment, sugar becomes a creative element that has been reclaimed and reinterpreted in music, dance and film. Sugar like Pop is easily accessible and instantly gratifying. This project will critically deal with the consequences of an element that is so easily digestible by focusing on the labor that it takes to produce this household commodity. Pop will be used as an aesthetic choice to abstract and express its ongoing influence in societies daily affairs.


What the Collective hopes to present from their time together is the initial draft that they have realized, to conduct workshops for this progressive multidisciplinary project.

They have shaped the structure of their time together into creative tasks and strategies.
Their strategies are broken down into four (4) main areas :

  • Methodology Exploration: for a collaborative practice. Explore what it means to work together with a group of artists, from several different fields, in order to generate content
  • Curatorial Exploration: Explore how to create and design events that are like social sculptures

What the group is proposing is that each member of the SUGAR (REDUX) collective act as the representative for a specific genre. By adding their expertise from that genre, during their creative tasks, they hope to be built a framework for future workshops.

They have designed the creative tasks into five (5) main exercises:

  • Switching Roles: As the project calls for contemporary artists of varying genres there will be a process where the participants irreverently "steal" one another's artistic identities. How will the work be impacted if they release themselves from past notions of artistic identities?
  • Rotating Directorship: While they will be primarily functioning as a collective, "rotating directorship", will put executive power in the hands of one person for a specific period. The focus of the group will be on realizing the singular vision of the "director" for that period of time.
  • Editing Studio: Editing studio is about creating a time and space to essentially curate our generated material. The idea is to collect and assess documentation and critically discuss and make choices about what to further investigate. This research grant would allow the collective the opportunity to implement and test out these strategies and exercises Towards the end of the residency they would like to test a blueprint workshop/draft with the citizens of the Aire Urbaine community.



Combining her artistic practices as a performer, director, curator and educator, Sarah Lewis has come to play the role of a host. Her present work focuses on knowledge dissemination through theatrical forms.By assembling materials and facilitating situations, she provides a platform (or stage) that attempts to level out hierarchies of those who "know" and those who "don't" - after all, we are all cultural producers.

The structures she proposes provide room for reflection on the assumed roles people enact on a daily basis where the public is then invited to create their own collective script.

Yohanna Báez

Yohanna Báez is a journalist and freelance editor based in New York. A former production assistant for the The Tavis Smiley Show (PBS/KCET) and BBC Worldwide- she produced a documentary about tourism in the Dominican Republic. During her experience she earned valuable knowledge and skills as a journalist/social-worker. The documentary was an official selection at the Boston Latino International Film Festival and Costa Rica International Film Festival. It is also in the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute library. She was born in La Romana.

Joiri Minaya

Joiri Minaya was born in New York City, 1990- and grew up in Dominican Republic. She graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuals (ENAV) in Santo Domingo in 2009, the Altos de Chavon School of Design in La Romana, in 2011 and Parsons the New School for Design in 2013. She also attended the Skowhegan Summer residency, for painting and sculpture in 2013. Minaya has been included in various important exhibitions including

the 2013 XXVII National Bienial of the Museum of Modern Art, Santo Domingo, ARC magazine’s New Media Exhibition at the Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival, and the Women in the Heights: Celebrations Exhibition at the NoMAA gallery. She was also included in the 2012 Ciclo Nomada de la Tabacalera Madrid, Spain and in the 2010 IV International Triennial of Ceramic Tile at the Centro Leon Jimenes in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Minaya currenly lives and works in Manhattan, NYC.

Zen Jefferson

Born in York, England to a Swiss mother and African American father, Zen spent his childhood amongst the green mountains and blue waters of Seattle. From there, he ventured to New York and studied dance at the Julliard School, graduating in 2006 with a BFA in dance. Later he taught movement expression for children in South Africa before moving to Europe, where he has worked in various contemporary dance companies in Germany and France. Additionally, his choreography was awarded the critic & audience prize for his piece "Little Red Rides through the Hood" at the

Hannover International Choreographic Competition in 2009. Later he began to experiment with music and sounds through DJ’ing in Berlin and continued on to France and Brussels. His music is always based on a deep connection to the rhythm, melody and bass patterns originally found in the ancient musical traditions of Africa and their influence on all our modern music today. Diving into the future, with a strong connection to the past, his music is about bringing people together, creating instant, global communities that break down the restrictions of modern world classifications. Exploring ancient melodies and rhythmic traditions that connect us directly to our drum woven past and re-contextualizing that energy into a multi ethnic hybrid of vibrations and transcendence.
